A Calm Living Room Framed in Gobi Oatmeal

In Mrs Winkler’s North Shore home, this spacious living area needed more than a standard curtain solution.

The large glass doors face the street, so privacy was one of Mrs Winkler’s main concerns. At the same time, with winter approaching, she wanted the room to feel warmer, softer, and more comfortable for everyday living.

What made this space especially interesting was the shape of the glass area. The wide corner sliding doors did not run in one straight line — they turned around the room at an angle. This created a beautiful architectural feature but also meant the curtain design needed to be carefully considered.

The curtains had to do several things at once: soften the large glass surface, provide privacy from the street, help create a warmer feeling for the colder months, and still keep the relaxed, natural atmosphere of the home.

For this living area, we went through three rounds of fabric selection. Mrs Winkler considered several lovely dim-out fabric options, including Boyd, Jupiter, and Grove. In the end, she naturally fell in love with the fabric I had ultimately recommended — Gobi Oatmeal.

Gobi Oatmeal stood out for its soft texture, refined neutral tone, and 20% linen composition. It has a natural, relaxed character without feeling too casual. The oatmeal colour brings a gentle warmth to the room without overpowering the existing interior palette. It sits beautifully alongside the soft carpet, cream sofa, relaxed armchairs, and warm neutral walls, creating a calm and cohesive living space.

One of the key details of this installation was the custom curtain track. The curtains are hung on a track with two bends, allowing the fabric to wrap neatly around the corner sliding door. This creates a continuous and tailored look, rather than breaking the window furnishings into separate sections.

Because the left and right sides of the corner sliding door were not symmetrical, we also designed the two curtain panels in different widths. This was intentional — the goal was not to make the panels physically identical, but to make the overall result feel visually balanced. Once installed, the different panel widths helped the whole curtain treatment appear softer, more even, and more symmetrical to the eye.

The linen-blend texture of Gobi Oatmeal allows natural light to filter beautifully through the fabric. During the day, the curtains soften the brightness from the large glass doors while still keeping the room open and airy. The gentle movement of the S-wave style also adds rhythm and depth, giving the space a relaxed but refined finish.

This project is a lovely example of how the right fabric, track design, and panel proportion can completely change the feeling of a room. Instead of treating the angled corner sliding door as a difficult area, the two-bend track turned it into a design feature. The curtains now frame the space beautifully, soften the hard lines of the glazing, and bring a finished, high-end warmth to the whole living area.
