A Touch of Blue: When an Unexpected Colour Brings a Room Together

A Touch of Blue: When an Unexpected Colour Brings a Room Together

Sometimes, a colour that looks quite ordinary on its own can become something special when it finds the right place in a room.

In Galen & Kyran’s lovely North shore home, the Astra Blue Allusion Blinds were chosen to complement the subtle blue tones in the landscape painting on the far wall.

At first glance, Astra Blue may seem like an understated choice, perhaps even a little dark, especially when many homeowners may naturally lean towards lighter, more neutral window furnishings.

But once installed, the result tells a different story. Seeing the finished room, Galen and Kyran couldn’t be happier that they trusted their instincts and stayed with their original choice.

The blinds create a lovely visual connection with the painting while sitting comfortably alongside the deep green armchairs, warm neutral carpet and rich timber bookshelf. Together, these elements give the room a welcoming, well-balanced feel.

Rather than standing out as a separate feature, the blinds look as though they have always belonged there.

One of the things Galen & Kyran love about Allusion Blinds is how they combine the flowing elegance of curtains with the everyday convenience of blinds.

Unlike conventional vertical blinds, Allusion Blinds feature alternating sheer and opaque fabric sections. Their graceful folds give the windows a curtain-like finish, without losing the flexibility of adjustable blinds.

During the day, sunlight filters through the sheer sections, allowing the room to remain bright and connected to the garden outside. When more privacy or light control is needed, the vanes can simply be adjusted.

Another practical feature is that you can walk straight through the fabric vanes without opening the entire blind. For Galen & Kyran ’s large sliding doors leading to the outdoor area, this makes everyday access much easier.

What makes this project particularly interesting is how the window furnishings relate to the rest of the living space.

On one side, the expansive glass doors overlook the greenery outside, filling the room with natural light. At the other end, the timber bookshelf, landscape painting and comfortable armchairs create a cosy, traditional atmosphere.

Their sheer sections maintain the connection with the garden, while the flowing fabric adds an elegant contrast to the room’s more structured furnishings. Even the repeated vertical folds sit naturally alongside the lines of the bookshelf, creating a pleasing sense of continuity.

Fabrics can look quite different once installed across a large window and viewed alongside the existing furnishings. In Galen & Kyran’s home, that little touch of blue makes all the difference.
