From Glare to Comfort: Turning the Brightest Corner into a Family Space

Mrs Karydis’s living room in their Sydney north shore area has a beautiful architectural feature: a large, curved window area that gives the room character, openness and an abundance of natural light.

The curved window area was both the standout feature of the room and its biggest challenge, with intense sunlight pouring in throughout the day.

Previously, Mrs Karydis had two layers of window furnishings installed — white roller blinds together with white sheer curtains. Visually, the combination was light and elegant, but unfortunately it was not enough to deal with the intensity of the Australian sun.

During summer, the space became extremely bright and noticeably hotter. Glare was difficult to control, and despite being one of the most attractive parts of their home, the area was simply not as comfortable or usable as it should have been.

During the job meeting, Mrs Karydis carefully selected Weylands – Stone, a full blockout fabric from over 20 fabric samples we brought and showed them.

For such a large expanse of curtain, colour selection was particularly important.

The Stone colour has a soft, calm and slightly cool character during the day, helping balance the intensity of the sunlight without making the room feel dark or heavy. Because the curtains cover such a substantial area, the lighter neutral tone also avoids creating unnecessary visual weight or making the space feel enclosed.

Then, when the interior lights are switched on in the evening, the same Stone colour takes on a subtly warmer appearance, blending naturally with the lighting, timber flooring and neutral furnishings.

The Challenge of a Curved Curtain Track

The curved section of the room was also the most technically demanding part of the installation.

A straight curtain track is relatively straightforward. A curved track requires considerably more attention to its shape, positioning and installation so that the curtain follows the architecture naturally and operates smoothly.

The objective was not simply to cover the windows. The track needed to look as though it belonged to the room.

Once the curved track was installed and the curtains were finally hung, Michael and Elaine looked at the finished space and simply said:“Wow, Fantastic !”

They later told us that Ms. Curtain had been one of three companies they approached for quotations and possible solutions.

Their comment after seeing the completed installation meant a great deal to us:

“We didn’t make the wrong choice!”

For us, that is the most meaningful part of a project. A customer is not only purchasing curtains; they are trusting us to make a recommendation, solve a practical problem and change the way a part of their home can be used.

Perhaps the best result is what happened afterwards.

The curved area that had previously been too bright and uncomfortable during hot summer days has now become a much more practical family space — even a favourite little haven for the children.
